Great Looking Breakfast Nook Window Treatments

In many homes, there is a room off the kitchen that we call a breakfast nook. This room is usually finished with three walls that often have many windows. Many people begin their day at the breakfast nook table so natural light is a welcome part of that ritual. However, too much natural light is not desirable because it leads to glare and direct sunlight in the yes at certain times of the day. In order to avoid the unpleasant attributes of too much sunlight in your breakfast nook you might want to add window treatments.

One common solution is to install shear curtains. These drapes are usually made of nylon, silk, cotton, or any open weave sheer fabric. This type of window covering will allow natural light to get through, but will cut down on harsh sunlight or glare.

Once the sun has risen to a point where it is not in your direct eye line, then you will want to fashion some kind of side pull to tastefully pull your curtains aside and enjoy the daylight. Most people use a small piece of fabric than will tie around the gathered curtain and then attach to the wall with an eyehook or snap. If you do not want to gather the curtains, then you can also let them hang loose at the edge of the window.

Honeycomb or cellular shades offer another option for keeping out the glaring sunlight in the morning and evening hours. This style of shade is made from a lightweight non-woven polyester fabric and allows light to filter through so you can still enjoy the benefits of natural light. Even more important to some is the insulating ability of these shades. They will help keep cool or hot air from leaving your house.

When the cellular shades are not in use, they rise to the top of the windows and take up very little room. The small storage space is possible because of the way the honeycomb shades fold together. This window treatment allows for a much more streamlined look than billowy curtains.

The honeycomb shades or the hardware from either type of window treatment can be hidden from view by a valence or cornice. These decorating touches can add character to any breakfast nook with a touch of color or by adding curved lines to what you can assume will be a very boxy look from your kitchen that is full of square cabinets and appliances.

No matter what kind of window treatments you install, they will add value to your home. If you leave decorative elements behind when you sell your home, they add to its value and make it seem livable to the prospective buyer. It may be less overwhelming for them if you have done some of the decorating for them.

Curtains for your breakfast nook serve both a utilitarian and an aesthetic purpose. Few decorating elements can claim the same. You can complete a curtaining project in your breakfast nook yourself or hire an installer to do the work for you. Measuring is very important and mistakes can be made easily. Because of this and their importance to the room, my recommendation would be to hire help.
